Engines do two different things with a business. They recommend it: your name appears inside the answer. And they quote it: your words become the answer, with your name attached and often your link beside it. Recommendation gets you mentioned. Citation makes you the source.
You have seen citation without noticing it. Perplexity hangs numbered footnotes on nearly every sentence. ChatGPT links the pages it read when it searches. Google's AI answers carry source cards beside the text. Every one of those is an engine saying: I did not make this up, this business did.
Why engines quote at all
An engine assembling an answer is staking its own credibility, the same stake you saw on Day 8. The safest answer it can give is one built from passages it lifted from sources it trusts, with the receipts showing. So it hunts for passages it can lift whole: statements that stand alone, say one thing plainly, and still make sense with no page around them.
That is the whole test. Not the best writing on the internet. The most liftable writing on the internet.
The four marks of a liftable passage
It answers a whole question in two or three sentences. Not a teaser that points somewhere else. The complete answer, compact enough to quote.
It stands alone. No "as we mentioned above," no pronouns pointing at earlier paragraphs. A quoted passage arrives in front of a reader with zero context. If it only works inside the page, it does not get lifted.
It carries a specific. A number, a timeframe, a place, a named condition. "Most water heaters in this county fail between years eight and twelve" is quotable. "Water heaters eventually fail" is filler.
It sits under a heading that states the question. The Day 6 pattern. The heading tells the engine which question this passage answers, in the words a customer would use.
The owner's advantage
Here is what the big content operations cannot copy: you know things about your trade in your town that nobody has written down. What the local inspections actually catch. What a job really costs and why the range is what it is. What fails first in the housing stock you work on every week. Write one of those down plainly and you are not competing to be the source. You are the only source.
Do this today. Take the question you answered on Day 6 and read it against the four marks. Tighten it until a machine could lift it whole and a stranger could act on it with no page around it. That is one citable passage. Every one you add is another place an engine can point at your business by name.
