There was a time when the math of search was simple. Rank first, collect the clicks, turn a share of them into customers. Whole industries were built on moving a page from position four to position one.
The ranking still exists. The math behind it does not. When a question gets answered on the results page, or inside a chat, most people stop there. The click that used to reward the number one position happens less, because the answer already did the job. Your page did not fall. The finish line moved behind the answer.
The engines now go straight to sources they trust
In August 2026, measurement of ChatGPT's search behavior showed a sharp change: direct site-specific lookups jumped from under one percent of its searches to roughly seventeen percent in a single day (Promptwatch, August 2026). Instead of sweeping the open web and seeing what comes back, the engine increasingly goes directly to sources it already knows and reads them for the answer.
Read that as a business owner, not as a technician: the engine keeps a short list, and it answers from the short list. Getting on it is not a trick. It is the same three legs, built patiently: an identity the engine can verify, outside sources that back it, and pages worth quoting.
SEO is not dead. It changed jobs.
Everything that made a page rank still matters, because it is how engines discover and trust content in the first place. What changed is what wins the moment: the page that answers beats the page that ranks. A page can do both. Most do neither well.
The rewrite that matters
Pull up the page on your site that ranks best. Read only the first two sentences. Do they answer the question that brings people to that page?
On most business sites they do not. They open with the company, the years in business, the commitment to excellence. The answer, if it exists at all, is four scrolls down. An engine assembling an answer takes the passage that answers, from whoever wrote it.
Rewrite the opening today. State the question the page exists for. Answer it in two plain sentences a machine could lift whole and a person could act on. Then let the rest of the page earn the deeper read: the proof, the process, the price, the call.
That is one page. Do it once and you will recognize the pattern everywhere on your site, and every fix compounds, because engines re-read the sources on their short list.
