Three acronyms are flying around every conversation about digital marketing right now: SEO, AEO, and GEO. Most explanations treat them as competing choices, as if you have to pick one and abandon the others. That framing is wrong, and it is sending business owners in the wrong direction.

SEO, AEO, and GEO are three layers of the same discipline. They share the same foundation. They measure different outcomes. And according to a 2026 LinkedIn analysis by B2B marketing strategist Chetan Giridhar, "a page can rank number one on Google and never get pulled into a ChatGPT answer, because the structural elements AI engines look for are not the same ones Google's ranking algorithm rewards."

The short version: SEO earns you a click. AEO earns you a featured answer. GEO earns you a citation inside an AI-generated response. You need all three, but you do not need to work on all three equally this week.

This article defines each discipline clearly, explains how they relate to each other, and tells you where to start based on what your business actually needs right now.

The Three Disciplines, Defined

SEO: Search Engine Optimization

SEO is the practice of making your website pages rank highly in traditional search results, primarily Google and Bing. It is built on technical health, content relevance, backlinks, and page authority. The goal is a click: a person sees your link in a list of results, chooses it, and lands on your site.

SEO is not going away. Research published in 2026 by digital strategy analyst Chetan Giridhar makes a point worth repeating: "AI engines disproportionately cite content that already ranks well in traditional search. Strong SEO does not guarantee AI visibility, but weak SEO almost guarantees its absence."

What SEO measures: keyword rankings, organic clicks, organic traffic.

Where the work happens: your website, your page structure, your backlinks.

AEO: Answer Engine Optimization

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so it gets extracted and displayed as a direct answer by AI-powered search features. This includes Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, Bing Copilot, and voice assistants. The user may never click through to your site. Your brand just answered their question directly in the search experience.

Digital Agency Network's 2026 comparison frames this clearly: "You are not competing for a click in a list. You are competing to be the answer."

AEO is won through content structure: leading with a direct answer, using clear headings, writing in short extractable paragraphs, and including schema markup that tells search systems what your page is about.

What AEO measures: snippet capture rate, AI Overview presence, voice search inclusion.

Where the work happens: your website pages, specifically how they are structured and written.

GEO: Generative Engine Optimization

GEO is the discipline of making your brand visible and accurately described across the full ecosystem of AI-generated answers. It includes AEO, but goes further. GEO is about being cited by generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude when they synthesize a response from multiple sources.

GEO was formally introduced as a concept in a 2023 Princeton University research paper by Aggarwal et al. and has since become the organizing framework for AI visibility strategy. The key insight from that research: traditional SEO tactics "have little to no effect on generative engines." GEO requires different signals.

What GEO measures: citation share across AI platforms, mention rate, AI share of voice.

Where the work happens: everywhere AI is reading about your category, including your website, LinkedIn, Reddit, review platforms, directories, news articles, and YouTube.

The layers build on each other. Strong SEO creates the authority foundation AEO needs. Strong AEO creates the structured, extractable content GEO rewards. None of the three replaces the previous one.
