For twenty years there was one game: rank on Google, get the click. That game still exists, but it is now one of three, and most businesses are only playing it.
SEO, search engine optimization, is getting your site to rank in the list of links, with a click as the goal. AEO, answer engine optimization, is being the direct answer when the engine answers the question itself, in AI Overviews, voice, and snippets, where the goal is to be the answer even when no one clicks. GEO, generative engine optimization, is being named and cited inside the AI's own response in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini, where the goal is to be the business the AI recommends.
The shift underneath all three is that people now get the answer without visiting a site. If you only do SEO, you have optimized for a page fewer people reach. That is not a reason to abandon SEO, because strong fundamentals feed AEO and GEO. It is a reason to stop treating the link as the finish line. Visibility now lives in the answer.

Be Socially Smashing LLC. Get Found. Get recommended. Get cited.
Test it today. Ask an AI a question a customer would ask about your industry. If your name is not in the answer, you have an AEO and GEO gap, not a ranking problem. Rewrite the first 200 words of your most important service page to lead with the direct answer, then add schema.
